Six missing in floods in Antalya
Six missing as flash floods hit Turkey's coastal areas.
Officials announced on Monday that six people are missing in the southern coastal province of Antalya as strong storms and torrential rain hit Turkey's coastal provinces on Sunday and Monday, triggering flash floods.
Three bridges enabling access to Antalya's Serik district collapsed due to flooding and six people in Haskızıloren village reportedly went missing. Antalya Governor Ahmet Altıparmak stated that 25 villagers who were trapped amidst rising waters were rescued on Sunday night when the torrential rain began to seriously affect the village they lived in.
He added that efforts are still under way to rescue more missing people. Noting that access to the village is impossible due to collapsed bridges, he explained that helicopters were sent to the area to rescue villagers.
Officials canceled classes for elementary and secondary school students across the province due to heavy rains. Air traffic was also negatively influenced by strong storms and heavy rain with several flights being delayed at Antalya Airport.
Torrential rains also wreaked havoc in the Aegean provinces of Izmir, Mugla, Manisa and Chanakkale as many homes and workplaces were flooded.
